My Children

A week ago today my husband and I celebrated our anniversary. That evening we arrived at a local restaurant for dinner and were greeted with giggles.

“Happy anniversary,” one woman snickered.

We asked how she knew what we were celebrating. She replied that she read about our anniversary in the local paper. We hadn’t put anything in the newspaper we told her. Seeing our puzzled expressions, she shrugged and said it must be a mistake.

Over dinner we tried to figure out how the woman knew about our anniversary—and why it seemed so funny to her. Had someone else submitted something? Like our...children? We looked at each other and smiled. My husband and I are both guilty of putting--shall we say humorous--photos in the paper for relative’s birthdays. I speculated our children were probably, well, products of their environment.

“They wouldn’t do that to us,” said my husband.

“Yes," I said, "they would.”

“What picture would they have used?” he asked.

We both gasped. Surely our loving offspring wouldn’t use any embarrassing shots, like photos of us with messy hair, or worse yet, the dreaded just getting out of the shower photos!!!

We gulped dinner, got our raspberry cheesecake to go and headed for the nearest 7-11 where the clerks were laughing...

In the end, we got a good laugh and lots of compliments. Most people think we've aged well--for as ancient as we are!

To my children: All four of you still have birthdays coming up AND two of you also have anniversaries!
