Tuesday . . . touch my heart: Matthew's Eagle Project

I'm a columnist for our local paper and a few weeks ago I wrote about my belief that each day has something to teach us and can be our best if we so choose.

That raised a few eyebrows.

Life is tough. Some days are just plain bad. Hard. Difficult. Distressing. Horrible, etc.

Granted. I agree.

But I still maintain that we can choose to see the best even in the worst. I just didn't come to that belief, that knowledge, on a whim. I've watched people for years, how the act, how they react. What they choose. Those who have trials and heartaches that bear the weight of the world have been among my greatest teachers. A man who had only weeks to live but who determined to live life to the fullest. A woman burned over 80 percent of her body who finds the joy in each moment. A man who because of his physical condition never knows if every breath might be his last but who strives to make each second count by serving and uplifting those around him.

And last week I heard about Matthew Shelley, a boy born with a hole in his diaphragm who had only a 50 percent chance of surviving. Matthew did survive and is now undertaking a project to bring a little joy into the lives of children who will be hospitalized this Christmas.

Please, take a moment and read more about Matthew on his blog:
